- bibliography

This page will emerge gradually as I find relevant texts. Texts concerning individual works can be found in the large worklist and won't be included here.

A. Books, dissertations and other large texts

Per Olov Broman: "Hilding Rosenberg", 191 pages in Swedish. The first book in Atlantis' and the Swedish Royal Academy of Music's series "Svenska tonsättare". A chronological survey of Rosenberg's life and works mainly aimed at the layman. Also includes chapters on Rosenberg's views on Tradition, Message and Craft, worklists, guides to further reading and listening. Number 107 in "Kungl. Musikaliska Akademiens skriftserie". ISBN 978-91-7353-138-2. Recommended!

Gerd Schönfelder's 1991 study "Revelations of new music. Hilding Rosenberg: Johannes Uppenbarelse (Symphony No. 3 [sic!])", pages 28-57 in his and Hans Åstrand's book "Contemporary Swedish Music through the Telescopic Sight", nine analytical studies, published 1993 by Edition Reimers. In English. ISBN 91 7370 110 6. Schönfelder considers that movements 3-7 of Johannes Uppenbarelse form a symphony, while movements 1-2 and 8 sets an oratorio frame. "The third and fourth movements relate to each other as the exposition and development in the main movement of a sonata form."

Herbert Connor's book "Svensk musik, 2. Från Midsommarvaka till Aniara" (p1977, ISBN 91-0-041778-5, 528 pages in Swedish) contains a 42 pages long chapter on HR. Good introduction!

Sven-David Sandström's "Hilding Rosenberg som kompositör i 1920-talets Stockholm", a paper for the Stockholm University the spring 1967. 112 pages in Swedish with a detailed analysis of Rosenberg's second string quartet, presentation of other pieces from the twenties, critic's reception etc. Recommended.

Den europeiske Rosenberg (in Swedish), a 48 page booklet issued by Stockholms Konserthusstiftelse1997, ISBN 91-630-5634-4. Includes a large article by Bo Wallner (Tre korta kapitel om stråkkvartetter, Hilding Rosenberg och musiklivet i Stockholm) and short ones by Daniel Börtz, Ingvar Lidholm and Mats Widlund, a poem by Johannes Edfelt, a short biography, a short worklist and some pictures. Issued for the festival 1997-1999 with all the 14 Rosenberg quartets played at the Stockholm Concert Hall.
Bo Wallner's article was also republished with the title "Kvartetter från fyra decennier" in his collection of essays, "Profiler", issued in 2002 by the Royal Swedish Academy of Music, ISBN 91-89038-24-X.

Björn Martinson; the dissertation "Hilding Rosenbergs apokalyps. Studier i Johannes Uppenbarelse - ett musikverk i stridsrustning" (Bokbox Förlag 1999). ISBN 91-86980-50-5. A deep study of the fourth symphony, or rather "symphonic oratorio" as it doesn't live up to Rosenberg's own 1944 definition of a symphony: "motives and themes organic growth to a greater orchestral context". Martinson describes the harmony in Rosenberg's pieces cirka 1934-45 as "substance-affinitive", more vertically oriented than the horizontally oriented music from the twenties. Main text in Swedish, Summary (16 pages) and Abstract (also at http://www.lu.se/o.o.i.s?id=12588&postid=19362) in English. Recommended with enthusiasm!

Per Olov Broman; the dissertation "Kakofont storhetsvansinne eller uttryck för det djupaste liv? Om ny musik och musikåskådning i svenskt 1920-tal, med särskild tonvikt på Hilding Rosenberg" (2000). ISBN 91-554-4775-9. Deals with Rosenberg's (and some other avantgardists) aesthetics during the twenties. Ralph Waldo Emerson's philosophy and Ernst Kurth's Grundlagen des linearen Kontrapunkts (1917) seems to have been influential on Rosenberg. Main text in Swedish, Abstract in English (also at http://publications.uu.se/theses/abstract.xsql?isbn=91-554-4775-9) and Zusammenfassung in German. Recommended with enthusiasm!

Hilding Rosenberg; the memoirs "Toner från min örtagård", Natur och Kultur 1978. ISBN 91-27-00876-2. Manuscript edited by Karin Jacobsson. Some photos. Only in Swedish. Recommended!

En bok till Hilding Rosenberg 21/6 1977. Kungliga Musikaliska Akademiens skriftserie nr 19, 1977. ISBN 91-85428-05-1. Includes Tabula gratulatoria (for HR:s 85th birthday), poems, prose, drawings, short compositions by Holmboe, Bäck, Lidholm & Börtz, a large essay by Bo Wallner on Orpheus in Town, other's memories of HR etc. Also the worklist compiled by Peter Lyne.
